Giuseppe’s, a family-run Italian restaurant, is one of those places that instantly transports you to old-school Italy, right in the heart of London. With its rustic look, walls covered in photos — including several of the owner himself, Giuseppe — and Italian music playing in the background, it’s clear this restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it’s a little piece of history, going strong for the past 40 years tucked away just next to London Bridge station. Giuseppe’s was named Italian Restaurant of the Year 2022 in the Prestige Awards, proof of its long-standing reputation.
The food, however, had its highs and lows. The chicken Milanese was excellent — crispy, golden, and packed with flavour. But the pasta with ragù, oddly served on the same plate, wasn’t as impressive. While the pasta itself was cooked well, the ragù lacked the rich, slow-cooked depth you’d expect from a classic Italian sauce. To top it off, the side salad felt unnecessary, almost like an afterthought. Both the chicken and pasta could have used a little more salt, though I’ve noticed that’s pretty common in London restaurants. At around £25, it was one of the most complete (and surprisingly affordable) dishes on the menu, especially given the location.
For dessert, we tried the cannolo, which was massive. The ricotta filling was tasty, but it was served a little too cold, which took away from the creaminess. The biggest letdown was the shell, which should have been crisp and crunchy but ended up too soft to give that satisfying bite. At £8.45, it felt a little overpriced for a single cannolo, and overall, the dessert options were pretty limited.
One thing that really stands out at Giuseppe’s is the atmosphere. The staff are warm and welcoming, and Giuseppe himself makes the rounds, chatting with customers and making everyone feel at home. The hospitality is undeniable, and you get the sense that many people come back for the experience.
And if you’re in the mood for something different, the restaurant takes a surprising turn late at night. On Fridays and Saturdays, from 11 pm to 4 am, Giuseppe’s transforms into a disco — yes, really. The tables are pushed aside, the music gets louder, and suddenly, it’s a full-on party. But that’s not the only entertainment they offer — on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 pm, live singers take the stage, adding a lively and intimate touch to the evening.
