It’s 8 pm and I’m still at LCC tapping away at my keyboard working toward another deadline. My stomach is growling — a familiar feeling for any uni student during deadline season. The shift in seasons has me feeling under the weather, and I know exactly what I need: something warm, something spicy, something comforting.
I find myself pacing toward Mercato Metropolitano, where I’m welcomed by the warm glow of orange fairy lights draped across the courtyard, easing my pace. As I step inside, I stroll around, eyeing the variety of food stalls, Argentine steak, fresh pasta, Mauritian food. All enticing — but, as always, I find myself back at Ramen + Katsu.
This ramen has me on a leash. It’s not the most traditional bowl, and some purists might consider the ingredients borderline blasphemous. But once it reaches your taste buds, all preconceptions are put to rest.
I go for the vegan classic soupy ramen in a spicy broth, a side of fries drenched in katsu curry sauce, and a lemony lemonade — all for £15.
While I wait, I flick through a few pages of my book, whilst 2010 R&B tunes play on the speaker. The steaming bowl arrives, noodles swirling in a rich, umami-packed broth. Loaded on top sit rocket, sweetcorn, chargrilled leeks, crushed peanuts and two crispy chick’n katsu dippers topped with a dollop of creamy vegan mayo. As I tuck in, I’m met with a gorgeous blend of peppery rocket, sweet leeks and corn, and the crunch of peanuts, adding unexpected layers of texture and flavour. The spice level is just right — enough to make my nose run a little. Coupled with chunky fries soaked in katsu curry sauce it went down scrumptiously with the lemonade.
As I sit back and indulge in my food, I notice customers doing laps around the food court, only to end up back at Ramen + Katsu. Maybe they’re first-timers, drawn in by the enticing menu, or they’re returning customers like me. Either way, it’s a clear fan favourite.
For those who don’t fancy soupy ramen, the stall offers soupless ramen and rice bowls. Meat lovers can choose from beef brisket, Japanese fried chicken, or teriyaki chicken skewers. You also get the option to choose your broth; spicy, katsu curry, garlic, or truffle. An option for everyone. Plus, if you don’t want the bundle deal, a bowl alone is just £11.50 — a steal for a meal this hearty.
