When I first moved to Peckham there was an abundance of restaurants and cuisines. I made it my mission to work my way through and find what was best. Throughout my journey of doing so, I found myself returning to the same small shop. JB’s Soul Food.
Located slightly off the street, the restaurant is easily missed but the small queue outside piqued my interest. As a fan of Jamaican food, I knew I had to try it, am I’m so glad I did.
The restaurant in itself is warm and inviting. It’s a family-owned spot and you can tell from the moment you walk in. The atmosphere is friendly and personal. With limited seating, its clear JB’s Soul Food is designed for takeout, so the food is best enjoyed at home. They wrap up the food nice and tight, so I’ve never had an issue with the food being cold. Despite the restaurant being small, the passion and love put into the food are anything but limited.
The food here is sensational and budget-friendly with a full meal starting at just £4 with generous portion sizes. The menu consists of traditional Jamaican food such as jerk chicken, curry goat, and oxtail. You can find sides such as mac and cheese and delicious patties for around £2. Each dish is bursting with flavour and it’s evident that time and care have been put into the meals.
Since my first visit, I have tried most things on the menu with the jerk chicken meal and a beef patty becoming my go-to meals that only come to about £6 all together. JB’s Soul Food has easily become one of my favourite spots in Peckham. I have returned numerous times and even brought family and friends with me who agree the food is delicious with unbeatable prices and consistently friendly service.
