When the London rain starts pouring down, and I’m craving something more than just a warm cup of tea, I find myself wandering towards Union Viet Café on 120 Union Street. This cozy Vietnamese restaurant has become my haven, a place with love, and tasteful food.
Growing up, I took for granted how easy it was to find good Asian food. But since moving to London, I’ve learned to appreciate the hidden restaurants that make this city so special. Union Viet is a simple, small, family-run eatery that serves up authentic Vietnamese dishes with a modern twist.
I still remember one particularly gray, rainy evening when I ducked inside, escaping the damp streets of Southwark. The warm lighting and inviting aroma were an instant comfort. A handful of tables were filled with locals, along with quiet conversations and sizzling sounds from the kitchen.
The menu, a concise collection of Vietnamese classics, has drawn me in. I debated between the comforting pho and the tempting crunch of their crispy coconut and sesame rolls. In the end, the promise of warmth won out, and I ordered the beef pho.
When it arrived, the fragrant broth filled the air with notes of star anise and cinnamon. The tender beef melted softly in my mouth, while the fresh herbs added a bright contrast. As I slurped the last of the noodles, I felt my worries wash away, replaced by a contented fullness.
I’ve since returned multiple times, each visit a new adventure. The prawn summer rolls, bursting with freshness, have become my staple order. The lemongrass tofu, a vegetarian delight, surprised me with its depth of flavour. At around £16 for a main, it’s not the cheapest meal in London, but the quality and generous portions make it worth every penny.
What keeps me coming back, besides the food, is the warmth of the staff. The family running the place treats every customer like a long-lost friend, their passion for Vietnamese cuisine evident in every dish they serve.
In a city overflowing with dining options, Union Viet stands out. If you’re ever in Southwark on a rainy day, it’s the perfect place to find comfort in a great meal. Sometimes, the best discoveries are the ones you stumble upon.
