Steam and Rye is an American-themed bar, and was opened in November 2013 by British model Kelly Brook, and her business partner Nick House.
Nick is the brain behind many of London’s most renowned night-time venues such as Mahiki and Whisky Mist. It’s easy to see where this is going.
Steam and Rye is like stepping into a world of American-based fun. Ribs and burgers galore are on the menu, with traditional American sides to go with it.
Anyone for macaroni cheese or some onion rings?Between us we ordered two of the ‘Dirty Chilli Burger’, one ‘Grilled 15lb Canadian Lobster’ and a portion of the ‘1kg of Slow Smoked St Louis Ribs’. Alongside this we had a side of onion rings and the mac and cheese.
The food isn’t cheap, but not eye-wateringly expensive either. It’s good value for the amount you get and the quality of it.
Not award-winning food, but plenty good enough for what you expect of the self-confessed ‘late-night party bar’. And there is certainly enough of it! Don’t expect to go home hungry.
The restaurant is upstairs, where you sit on a mezzanine level with a small window allowing you to observe all the fun going on downstairs.
With endless shark’s heads filled with alcohol being brought out to the evening’s big spenders (£175 a pop), and flapper dancers appearing every so often for a short boogy on the balcony, the window is a clever idea. We soon make our way down to see what we have been missing.
Scantily clad waitresses walk around selling jaeger bombs and shots, perhaps the reason the crowd is very male-orientated?
The cocktail list is impressive; with drinks appearing in popcorn packaging, on fire, with an ice-lolly on top.
Ostentatious perhaps, but great for Instagram!
Towards the end of the night a band come into action, playing a mix of old school tunes along side some current numbers.
Another highlight is the rodeo bull. Only in action on a Tuesday night, you can also get unlimited servings of Ribs or Shrimps with a side of coleslaw, for £18.95 per person.Good for the odd celeb-spot – Kelly Brook makes an occasional appearance, along with recent well-known guests which have included members of girl-band Little Mix.
It does attract a bit of a strange crowd. Steam and Rye seems to contain a lot of older-looking men in suits.
However if you can ignore that, which I could, it’s great place for a fun night with funky drinks and dancing.
