‘No Fees, No Cuts, No Debt!’
The ‘National Student Demo’ took place on Wednesday 19th November in central London.
Students travelled from across the country to march and protest about university tuition fees, according to organisers some 10,000 students attended.
Starting at Malet Street, walking around Russell Square, down Kingsway to the Strand and then to Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and ending at Parliament, the march created a fair amount of media attention.
The offices of NUS England were coated in paint ahead of the march, as support was withdrawn due to an “unacceptable level of risk to our members”, said NUS’s president Toni Pearce.
Four people were arrested during the demo, with police and protestors alike suffering minor injuries; these protestors were later released without charge.
Apart from the four arrests and a samba band that kept the crowds going, the majority of the protest was relatively peaceful.
Protestors also got the chance to listen to speeches from Green party politicians, Caroline Lucas and Natalie Bennett.
